Houseplant and Succulent Swap Groups on Telegram: Stopping Fake Rare-Plant Sales and Spam

Plant swap groups are friendly places: people trade cuttings, post photos of a new leaf and ask why their calathea is sulking. They also involve money, especially for rare variegated plants, and that attracts scammers.

Disclosure: this guide comes from the team behind 虾宝 (Xiabao), a Telegram anti-spam bot that is free for group owners.

What goes wrong

  • Rare plants that never ship. Variegated monsteras or rare aroids sold with borrowed photos and payment upfront.
  • Seed scams. Packets of "rainbow" or impossible plant seeds that grow into weeds, if anything.
  • Mislabelled cuttings. Common plants sold as rare cultivars, sometimes by mistake, often not.
  • Shipping deposits for "free" plants from strangers.
  • Bulk spam from new accounts.

Pin these rules

  • Every listing shows the actual plant in its pot beside a slip naming the member and the day it was taken.
  • Rare plants above an agreed price are swapped in person or through a member with a trading history.
  • No seed sales of unknown origin.
  • Free plants are collected, not shipped against a deposit.

Spotting a mislabelled plant

Variegation can revert, and young plants of different species often look alike. Ask sellers for close-ups of the leaf underside, the stem and any node or aerial root, plus a photo of the mother plant if it is a cutting. Members who grow a particular genus can usually confirm an ID within minutes. For expensive purchases, agree in the group that the buyer can return a plant that turns out to be something else. Honest sellers accept this because their reputation in the group matters more than one sale.

Organise and screen

Topics for Plant Care, Swaps and Sales, Pests and Problems, and Local Meetups keep things tidy. A join question like "What is your favourite plant right now?" welcomes real people and stops bots.

Use a bot for the junk

Moderators would rather water plants than delete spam. Xiabao, found as @xiabaotg_bot, works as a group admin: it picks up advertising links and scam offers in new posts, removes them and bans persistent senders after a warning. Care questions and leaf photos are left alone. The Xiabao guide for swap and community group owners shows how to add it.

Seasonal tidy-up

Spring is the busiest swap season. Before it starts, refresh the invite link, prune accounts that never posted and repost the swap format.
